Clay Jensen a main character in Thirteen reasons why a novel by Jay Asher is independent. For example at first Clay showed being influence by other about Hannah was wrong. This is proven when Clay states "She was new to the school so the rumors overshadowed everything else I knew about her"(30). This shows clay accepting that listening to rumors was a terrible choice. He also is having a hard time listening to Hannah’s tapes just thinking that he has something to do with her death but when he continues to listen to the tapes it shows that it’s a decision that he has chosen by himself. This is proven when he states "That’s not an obsession. It's respect. I'm living out her last request."(97). Clay was showing his independence in many ways but also when everyone thought wrong about Hannah he went his own way he , he proved this when stating " I would have helped her if she'd only let me I would have helped her because I want her to be alive." (280). Clay certainly cared about Hannah despite what everyone said he went his own way with his thoughts.Therefor Clay shows independence from the begging till the end of the book.
Hannah Baker, also a main character in Thirteen reasons why a novel by Jay Asher is very honest. She’s not only honest with other s but also honest with herself in. For example when she states “I know what all of you are thinking Hannah Baker is a slut” (23). She’s facing reality she knows that’s what others are thinking without being afraid, it not only shows honesty but courage something that she also has. Hannah never really gained control over what people said about her this was also shown when it was stated “I needed a change, just like they said, so I changed my appearance. The only thing I still had control over” (163). She didn't deny the fact of what other people thought. Hannah kept everything in order, the good and the bad. When it came to other people she didn't stop , she told them straight up and example of this was when Alex came up she had said “ Every single event documented here may never have happened had you , Alex, not written my name on that list”(41). It is shown that she didn't have a single guilty thought of stopping from mentioning him at the begging at the book, she wanted every single person receiving the tapes to know. Therefor throughout Hannah’s tapes she shows a lot of honesty.
Justin Foley, a minor character in Thirteen reasons why, a novel by Jay Asher, is cold-hearted. He tends to show this is many ways. One way was at the begging of the book when he absolutely gave the readers an idea of why he belongs there when one of our narrators, Hannah, stated “A rumor based on a kiss ruined a memory that I hoped would be special.”(30). Justin’s decision to start a rumor was just an insincere this was the reason that just made Hannah’s life to go down a bad road Justin seems to be one of the most heartless ones in the story but not only did he proved it to us in that occasion but also at the end of the book. This moment took place at one of Hannah’s most impacting party’s but here Justin showed he really didn’t care when it was stated that “I couldn't believe it. And your friend couldn’t believe it, either, because when he grabbed the doorknob again, he didn’t rush right in. He waited for you to protest” (226). Justin didn’t think of what the bigger consequences may happen he didn’t care about that girl he just thought of himself which was a cold hearted act. Even though Justin had a bad meaning to Hannah’s life he certainly did give her something to enjoy. Hannah once stated something good about Justin and that’s when she said “So thank you, Justin. Sincerely. My very first kiss was wonderful. And for the month or so we lasted, and everywhere we went, the kisses were wonderful. You were wonderful” (30). Justin had his good but a lot of worst time throughout the book proving how he can only think of himself and his reputation. Something many call being cold hearted.
